Decision 2008: The Arch Druid Election

Arch Druid Chelody set the stage Tuesday afternoon to announce that she was stepping down from her position of what former Arch Druid Fandral Staghlem used to call his “Arch-secretary elect”. In true Feathermoon tradition, the position of arch druid will be filled by popular vote by the denizens of Azeroth and the newly rediscovered Outland. Chelody’s statement marked the beginning of the what has been in the past an often engaging and highly contested election.

As the political temperature rose another notch yesterday, Emperor Bricu1 announced his support of a single candidate. “I am a huge fan of Calen’braga,” he said. However, he later stated, “I endorse Elyle,” referring to Dragonride Elyle Jh’Talith of the Wildfire Riders and popular candidate for arch druid.

Elyle returns to the election this year after a devastating failure in the previous year when it was pointed out that he had failed to meet all of the requirements of arch druid. In a public statement made following Chelody’s announcement, the rogue claimed, “Once again the time has come for me to be the peoples voice. I was unfairly denied the office last election by a corrupt governing body. Nothing short of victory will do this year.”

Nim, who held the position of arch druid two years prior, defended himself from Elyle’s taunts, telling the assembled masses that he was only following the guidelines established for the position. “Corrupt??” he exclaimed. “I didn’t tell the dragon flights to take a flying leap and planted the tree.” Shortly afterwards the former arch druid drove off in the Arch Druid Pope-Mobile. The vehicle — with its chrome leaf hubcaps, mageroyal racing stripes, and black lotus covered seat cushions — was claimed by Nim shortly after his departure from Darnassus.

Belphegor voiced support for Nim’s decision in 2006 in a highly controversial statement made Wednesday evening. Calling himself a concerned citizen, he warned the public that “Elyle must be stopped.” With rising candor, Belphegor continued, saying, “Not only has he demonstrated a lack of understanding of the exigencies of druidism, as a footpad, he fails at even the simplest of locks. You cannot vote for this lack of commitment to excellence. You cannot hold him as a benchmark for anything other than a shining beacon of mediocrity. You cannot validate a platform that is based on more noise than action. Like my grandfather used to say, he is no more than a Politician’s Fart - all noise, no smell.”

But there is mounting evidence that 2008 will be marked by fierce competition for the oft-desired seat. Naliendiel Nightsong of the Phoenix Dawn launched her election campaign with a statement early this week. And renowned mage Mixler of the Arcane Academy voiced the question that many were asking: “And when do we get to hear from Samhuinn?”
