News went out this morning regarding the status of the Wrath of the Lich King beta. With the closing of the alpha1, the beta has officially started and the first round of invitations have gone out by email to some lucky people who took the opportunity to opt-in to the beta earlier this month.
According to Blizzard poster Nethaera,
The Wrath of the Lich King invitations have started to go out, and we have officially begun the beta test. As with The Burning Crusade, the beta-test process for Wrath of the Lich King will occur in phases, during which we will be inviting players who have opted-in to participate. [Link]

Like many other people, I chose to opt-in to the Wrath of the Lich King beta. And, like many of those same people, I checked my email this evening and saw that I wasn’t one of the lucky few to receive the code that would let me create my new, temporary account. Disappointing, though there will be further opportunity to snag a code in the future; as with The Burning Crusade, Blizzard has chosen to invite people in phases. So while I apparently didn’t get accepted into this first phase, I may hopefully get into later ones.
Of course, this being the free and motivated society that we live in, people are already attempting to profit from their code. There is a listing on eBay for a Wrath of the Lich King beta key. As of the time of this writing, the current bid had reached over five hundred dollars. Impressive.
