Apparently We’re Recruiting Cross-Platform Now

House Al’shar on the Scarlet Crusade US roleplaying server has almost reached critical mass. At this point, we have some twenty people in the guild, though not everyone is regularly on the server. We have a core group of some five to seven people who log in on an almost daily basis, do some quests, interact with others, and generally have a bit of fun. Most of us are Feathermooners who seek refuge from our raids and guilds and the headaches that we occasionally have there, but we do have a handful of people that are either server natives or rolled on the server after reading about the guild on this site.1

Tallaa, our esteemed guild leader, has been contemplating actively recruiting on the server. I’m of two minds regarding this idea. First, this isn’t my primary server; I’ve got ten characters on the Feathermoon US roleplaying server, where I belong to a wonderful guild, contribute in two unique raids2, and have numerous friends that I enjoy seeing. On the other hand, I really would like to see House Al’shar prosper. Furthermore, since we do have people in the guild for whom Scarlet Crusade is their main’s server it would make sense to have more warm bodies to keep them occupied when we Feathermooners find ourselves switching to raid or do some other activity.

Raystlinn, who has taken to commenting on this site in the past week or so, has been one of our largest recruiters to date. He convinced some other Feathermooners to reroll, snagged a friend or two that had aided him in questing, and generally filled out the ranks a bit more. As a result, we’re slowly becoming accustomed to seeing new faces in the guild. We’re an amicable bunch, however, so we go with the flow and try to make these new people feel welcome.

Last night three of us were gabbing on Vent when a name we didn’t recognize joined us. Since the Vent information is posted in the Guild Information tab, we all figured that it was one of Ray’s more recent invites that we hadn’t met as of yet. The name looked similar to someone that I’d seen on Feathermoon, so I figured that he had used that name to log into Vent rather than his character in House Al’shar. We talk for a bit, banter back and forth, and generally have fun, while I fend off whispers from Tallaa who is wondering which House Al’shar character this is. You see, the only ones online at the time in the guild were we original three.

“Don’t worry!” I say in soothing whispers. “I think that I recognize the name. I bet he’s one of Ray’s recruits.”

Ten or fifteen minutes pass and this new person has yet to log onto his character in the guild. I scratch my head, shrug, and figure he’s just being polite by talking with his new guildies while working on some other things. A lot of us do that; I even spend time in the evening before I fall asleep talking with my fellow guildmates and friends even though I’m not actively playing the game at the time. I change my mind, however, when our newfound friend asks about the status of our town.

At first, I guess that he said “town hall” and somehow construe this to mean the guild website. And while it’s true that I have been contemplating purchasing the domain name and putting House Al’shar officially on the web, it’s something that I’ve only discussed with Tallaa. Then I remember that a former Feral druid tank in our raid who had left the game to pursue Age of Conan had mentioned a feature of the game that had really interested him: the establishment of player-created towns for the Age of Conan equivalent of guilds. This spiffy little feature was of especial interest to me because it reminded me of the player towns that sprung up on The Alter Realm Sphere Ultima Online server on which I used to be a Game Master.

“Hey, buddy!” I interject, interrupting Tallaa mid-sentence.3 “Where do you think you are right now? Like, what game is this guild in?”

There’s a pregnant pause as everyone waits for the newcomer’s answer with bated breath. After a couple of moments, he replies. “Isn’t this for the Age of Conan guild?” he hesitantly asks.

So, as we found out, this Age of Conan guild or clan or whatever they call it on that game had recently acquired a Ventrilo server, as many guilds are apt to do when they want to promote further communication. The person who managed the guild had posted the information on the website and invited all of the people to join. Our newest recruit had read the information, started up Vent, and jumped onto the server expecting to talk to his newly acquired guildmates — and instead ended up talking to us, a couple of roleplaying World of Warcraft addicts who mistook his identity. The mistake was further compounded by the fact that while his guild’s server had a password we didn’t. If we had, the error would have been discovered and we wouldn’t have ended up stumbling into the guy.

Now, I know that House Al’shar has been getting some recognition in the past couple of weeks and that we’re an awesome bunch of people. But have we really gotten so popular that we’re now snagging members from entirely different games? Tallaa will be pleased!

  1. Hi, Nozzy and Vandrys!
  2. Though it may soon be one given the way things are going in my perky priestess’s raid.
  3. It probably wasn’t important. I mean, it’s Tallaa.
